II/5e Later Greek Aitolian

450 BC - 275 BC

DBA 2.2

Army Composition:
(12 elements) 1 x (Gen) 4Sp, 1 x 2Lh, 3 x 4Sp, 7 x 2Ps

Historical Enemies: IIIyrian, other Later Hoplite Greeks, Hellenistic Boeotian, Alexandrian Imperial, Macedonian Early Successors and Galatians.

Painted this "Light Infantry" Army using left overs/spare Xyston Miniatures :o) This army has a lot of skirmishers and 4 elements of spears (one stand is the general - the figure wearing white leather/linen cuirass) A difficult army to command, totally relying on using rough/bad going terrain and woods for ambush attacks against her enemies (IIIyrians and other later Hoplite Greeks) This Aitolian Army may play better if used as an supporting contingent with one of her fellow Allied Hoplite Armies.

anyway...
As for my flocking of the bases I used Woodland Scenic Fine Brown Ballast followed by dry brushing over the ballast with Ivory Acrylic Paint. I used Woodland Scenics "Harvest Gold" static grass to flock the bases.

  1. Another splendid army, spears and javelins seem to be their speciality!

    1. Thanks Phil, yeah, lots of missile armed (Javelinmen) troops this army would be fun to play with Impetvs rules instead of DBA! ;o)

    1. Thanks Jonathan, I have so many spare Xyston figures sometimes I wonder what to do with the extra figures :o) so now and then I re-sculpt the spare figures using "green stuff" and try to convert some Xyston Greeks to Goths! :o)

  3. Great work Phil, on painting and basing. I have been thinking of painting a 15mm Swiss pike bloc next year, and seeing your 15s is a great motivator to have a go at this scale .
    Cheers

    1. Thanks Mike, Xyston Ancient miniatures are the best on the market to collect and paint... wish they have more DBA/Impetvs Army box sets though...

  6. Excellent Greeks, Phil. Xyston makes some of the best Ancients, and your brushwork really enhances them even more. Best, Dean

    1. Thanks Dean,
yeah I agree with you, Xyston are the best and coolest miniatures to paint and base them to play war games.

  8. Nice use of Leftovers; probably a better army to have in an "alliance" with several others on the tabletop, rather than on its own. Unless, of course, the table is strewn with a lot of very rough terrain!
